How an LPR parking system works, step by step
An LPR parking system reads each license plate at entry, matches it to a paid session, permit or validation, and reads it again at exit to close the visit. It is for operators running garages and lots with or without gates. The benefit is paperless entry and exit, with the plate and a digital ticket as the record.
Book a demoWhere plate cameras fall short on their own
Where operators run plate cameras on their own, the reads sit in a separate system. The camera knows a plate entered, while payments live in one tool, permits in a spreadsheet and validations on paper. Staff end up checking three places to answer a simple question at the exit: is this car paid? Misreads from dirty plates or odd angles add manual work, and nobody trusts occupancy numbers that do not line up with revenue.
- Plate reads are not connected to payments, permits or validations.
- Misreads send cars to the booth with no clear way to fix the record.
- Occupancy counts from cameras never match revenue reports.
- Adding cameras without a shared record only adds another screen to check.
What ParkingChief adds to plate reads
ParkingChief connects each plate read to one live session record per vehicle. The same record holds payments, permits and validations, so the exit decision and the enforcement check use the same data. LPR cameras, gates and kiosks for the lanes are supplied by ParkingChief, and open APIs and webhooks connect your other tools.
AI license plate recognition
AI license plate recognition reads the plate at entry and starts a digital session. At exit the second read closes it, and the fee is calculated from the location rates, schedules and any event rates on the calendar for that day.
Gated parking featuresPermits recognized by plate
A permit holder is matched by plate, so there is no hang tag or card to scan. Renewals charge automatically, and past-due permits are flagged in the same record that the lane camera and the enforcement team both check.
Monthly permits featuresValidations applied to the plate
When a merchant or tenant validates a visit, the validation attaches to the session for that plate. The exit read sees the discount, and the partner sees the charge in its own portal and monthly settlement statement.
Validations featuresOccupancy and turnover
Entries, exits, occupancy and turnover report by location, next to revenue from the same sessions. Operators compare sites across a portfolio and export CSV files for finance, so counts and revenue finally come from one source.
Operator portal featuresEnforcement lookups
Patrol officers in open areas run the same plate lookup from a phone or handheld. A vehicle read at the lane and a vehicle checked on foot resolve against the same paid sessions, permits and validations.
Enforcement features
Entry, session matching and exit
- 1
Camera read at entry
The lane camera captures the plate and AI license plate recognition turns it into text. A digital session opens with the entry time and location.
- 2
Match to a session
The plate is checked against paid sessions, active permits and validations. Parkers can pay by QR code during the stay, and the session updates live.
- 3
Exit and close
At exit the plate is read again, the balance is settled or confirmed, and the session closes. Gated lanes lift the arm, while gateless lanes simply log the exit.
Misreads, lane hardware and plate data privacy
AI license plate recognition reads plates at entry and exit. Staff review unclear reads, including plates obscured by mud or bike racks, and correct them against the session before a charge is made. LPR cameras and other lane hardware are supplied by ParkingChief, and open APIs and webhooks connect your other tools. Plate data is used to run parking operations such as payments, permits and enforcement, and access is limited by role and location.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does license plate recognition parking work?
A camera at each lane captures the plate, and AI license plate recognition converts the image to text. The system matches that plate to a paid session, permit or validation, then reads it again at exit to close the visit and settle any balance. No ticket is printed at any point.
Do we need to supply our own LPR cameras?
No. LPR cameras, gates and other lane hardware are supplied by ParkingChief, and a site can start with one location as a pilot. Open APIs and webhooks connect session data to your other tools as you move to paperless entry and exit.
What happens when an LPR camera misreads a plate?
A read that does not match cleanly is sent to staff for review rather than charged automatically. Staff correct the plate against the session, and the parker can still pay by QR code during the visit, so a single misread does not block the exit or bill the wrong vehicle.
Who can see license plate data in the system?
Access follows roles and locations. Operator Admins, Managers, Operators and Viewers only see the sites they are assigned, and partners see only their own accounts. Plate data is used to run parking operations such as payments, permits, validations and enforcement.
